We Built a FGBC Gold Level Certified Home — Here’s What That Means

We are proud to share that a project submitted by Toro Engineering & Construction Corp. has officially earned Gold Level certification from the Florida Green Building Coalition (FGBC) — one of the most respected green building standards in the state of Florida.

The certified property is 2720 Flagler Ave, Building A, Key West FL 33040, independently evaluated and awarded FGBC Gold Level status on June 6, 2025, with an impressive score of 187 points (Certificate #54424), verified by FGBC-accredited certifying agent Jennifer Languell.

This achievement isn’t just a badge on a wall. It’s proof that our team has the knowledge, process, and craftsmanship to successfully deliver a project to one of Florida’s highest green building standards. Here’s what it means — and why it matters to you.

What Is the Florida Green Building Coalition?

The Florida Green Building Coalition is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the built environment in Florida through education, advocacy, and certification programs specifically designed for our state’s unique climate, ecosystem, and lifestyle needs.

Unlike national green building programs, the FGBC was created with Florida in mind — accounting for our heat, humidity, hurricane risks, and natural resources. Earning FGBC certification means a project has been independently evaluated against a rigorous set of criteria tailored specifically for Florida’s conditions.

What Does Gold Level Mean?

FGBC certification is awarded at multiple tiers based on the number of sustainability points a project achieves. Gold Level represents one of the highest tiers of recognition — earned by projects that go well beyond the minimum requirements and demonstrate exceptional commitment to:

– Energy efficiency — reducing utility costs through smart design, high-performance systems, and quality construction
– Resource conservation — using materials and methods that minimize waste and environmental impact
– Health — creating indoor environments with improved air quality, better ventilation, and reduced exposure to harmful materials
– Durability — building to last, with systems and materials suited to Florida’s demanding climate

Reaching Gold Level requires excellence across all four categories — it is not something that happens by accident. It is the result of intentional planning, skilled craftsmanship, and a genuine commitment to doing things right.

It’s also worth being transparent: the FGBC Gold Level designation belongs to the certified property — not to the contractor. Each project is independently evaluated on its own merits. What this means for Toro Engineering is that we have demonstrated, on a real completed project, the ability to plan and build to this standard. That is something many contractors cannot say.

What This Means for Our Clients

When you build with Toro Engineering & Construction Corp., you are working with a team that has proven, on a verified and documented project, its ability to meet Florida’s most demanding green building standards. That experience translates into real, tangible benefits for you:

Lower operating costs. Energy-efficient construction means lower utility bills — month after month, year after year. The savings add up significantly over the lifetime of a building.

Higher property value. Green-certified buildings consistently command higher resale values and attract quality tenants and buyers who recognize and prioritize sustainability.

A healthier space. Whether it’s a home, commercial office, retail space, or mixed-use development, the people inside your building deserve clean air and a healthy environment. We build with that in mind from day one.

Third-party verified results. Our work at 2720 Flagler Ave was not self-reported — it was independently inspected, scored, and certified by an FGBC-accredited agent. When we say we build to a high standard, there is documentation to back it up.

Built for Florida. Every decision we make on a project accounts for Florida’s climate, storm resilience requirements, and environmental sensitivities. You get a building designed to perform here — not somewhere else.

Why This Achievement Matters to Us

At Toro Engineering & Construction Corp., we believe that building well means building responsibly. The construction industry has an enormous impact on the environment, on the communities we serve and on the people who live and work in the spaces we create.

Successfully delivering a FGBC Gold Level certified project is our way of putting that belief into practice — and into the permanent record. It reflects the values that drive every project we take on: precision, integrity, and a commitment to outcomes that last.

We are proud of this achievement, and we are even more proud of what it means for our clients and our community.
